Best running spikes for long distance

I’m moving up from 1500m to longer track races (5k/10k) and wondering what spikes/shoes people recommend for those distances. Do you need different spikes than middle distance, or will the same pair work fine?

For 5k/10k on the track you’ll want distance spikes — lighter, with fewer pins and more cushioning than sprint/mid-distance ones. Nike Dragonfly and Adidas Avanti are super popular right now.

I wouldn’t run 10k in my 1500m spikes, personally. They feel too aggressive and my calves get destroyed. Look for something with a bit more underfoot protection.

Honestly depends on your biomechanics. Some people race the 10k in super thin spikes with no issues. But if you’re new to the distance, I’d go with the newer “super spikes” that balance comfort and speed.

Dragonfly is the king at the moment, but the Avanti TYO and New Balance LD-X are also solid. Try them on if possible — the fit is quite different.

For training, I’d avoid spikes altogether and use a lightweight flat. Spikes are brutal on the legs if you wear them too much. Save them for race day.

I still use my 1500m spikes for 5k. Not ideal, but I can’t justify spending £200 on another pair. Just depends how competitive you are and what level you’re racing at.

Long distance spikes usually have 4–6 pins instead of 8, and the plate is a bit more forgiving. You’ll notice the difference after 20 laps!

If you want something budget-friendly, Saucony Havok or Brooks ELMN8 LD can sometimes be found on sale and they’re decent options.

Careful with sizing — distance spikes tend to run narrow. I had to go half a size up in my Dragonflys.

For 10k specifically, comfort matters more than you think. You don’t want to be thinking about foot pain at lap 15.

If you’re racing seriously, I’d suggest investing in a dedicated distance spike. It’s like having the right tool for the job — you’ll thank yourself mid-race.
